Osheen De Silva of SL Navy, who performed well in the Sri Lanka National Chess Championships 2021 is having a good time with 4points out of possible 5 games. Leading the Group A while Vinuda Shenal Gunatilake of Royal College also sharing the top spot with 4 points. Osheen beat Surath Wijerathne, Piyumi Amaratunge and Dinod Abeyratne and drew two games with Buddhika Amarasinghe and Malish Weeratunge while Shenal beat Dinod Abeyratne, Buddhika Amarasinghe with a bye in the 5th round and got two draws with Malisha Weeratunge and Jayandi Bimansa. 

Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage of DS Senanayake College is outstanding to score full 5 points out of possible 5 games. He outplayed all his opponents, S Sivathanuja, Sathini Liyanage, Kosala Amaratunge, Ginuri Kannangara and Menula Weheragod so far in Group B. Kabinu Geenuka Gunaweera is in the 2nd spot with 4 ½ points to his account. Kavinu beat Sathini Liyanage, Kosala Amaratunge, Ginuri Kannangara with a bye in the 5th round had 1 draw with Menula Weheragoda in Group B.

Buddhika Amarasinghe is in the 3rd place in Group A with 3 ½ points out of 5 while Kosala Amaratunge and S Sivathanujan are in the 3rd place with 3 out of 5 games in Group B.

The Chess Federation is offering Rs. 150,000/- as cash awards for the event conducted by them from 14th to 22nd February 2022 at CFSL headquarters, Nugegoda. This is the 2nd best event conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka per year, the beat being the National Chess Championship. Unfortunately, some top players are not participating this year due to the large number of events held during the last quarter of the 2021 and seems having rest before the most important National Chess Championships this year.

The event is played in two groups A & B in 9 round, round robin events as stage I and top two players of the each event will play a knocked out event as below in the final stage.

1. Semi Final I – A1 Vs B2

2, Semi Final 2 - B1 Vs A2

3. Finals - Winner 1 Vs Winner 2

4. Consolation Finals - Loser 1 Vs Loser 2

In the knocked out stage, two games with white and Black per each player is played, If the result is 1 - 1, Two Rapid Games with 15m + 10 seconds is played with either Colour. If still equal, two Blitz Games are played with 3m + 2 seconds if still tied an Armageddon game giving 5 minutes to white and 4 minutes to Black will be played and Black wins if the game is drawn.

CFSL has offered the following Cash awards with the medals and certificates:

Champion - Rs. 60,000/=

1st Runner -up - Rs. 40,000/=

3rd  - Rs. 25,000/=

4th - Rs. 15,000/=

5th - Rs. 10,000/=
