The basic division of the Sri Lanka Chess Nationals, Novices Division of the Sri Lanka National Championships Cycle 2022 was started in 15 regions with 1400 players today. The event is spread all over the country as 11 District events in Colombo, Gampaha, Kaluthara, Galle, Matara/Hambantota, together Ratnapura, Kegalle, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Ampara and Batticalo and in 4 provinces, Kandy, Wayamba, Uva and Northern. Only the unrated players are allowed to play in the Novices Division and all these 1400 players are still unrated.

The event is seven round Swiss System and around 20% of the players will be qualified to the next level, the intermediate level, the Sri Lanka National (Major Division) Chess Championships which will be held in around 7 regions. The qualifiers will join the rated players less than 2000 (Women 1700) in the Major Division event.

The Sri Lanka National Chess Championships 2022 consists of 4 stages. The Next two level is the National B Chess Championships, the highest Swiss System event in the country where all players more than 2000 in rating re playing. The top 12 players of the National B CC will meet the reigning National Chess Champion and the top ranked player in the National Chess Championships 2022 – Finals which is a round robin event of 14 players and 13 rounds. The same structure is used for the women where the players more than 1700 in rating are playing in Women’s National B CC 2022. The top five players each of the National Chess Championships 2022 finals will be selected to play in the FIDE World Chess Olympiad 2022 in Russia.

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka is offering more than Rs. 500,000/= and other attractive awards of these different levels.
