The Asian Junior/ Girls Online Chess Championship 2020 is conducted by the Asian Chess Federation among Asian Countries who will field teams of 3 Boys and 3 Girls to represent Their Countries. Initially it will be a selection event among the Zone of the country and top three players of the 7 zone Tournaments will compete for the final round on 4th June 2020.

Sri Lanka in Zone 3.2 with Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Malaysia and Bhutan. The National Champion and International Master Elect Harshana Thilakarathne will lead the team with Gayantha Dassanayake and Theekshana Denuwan who performed well in respective SL National Rapid Chess Championships in Boys event. Sayuni Gihansa Jayaweera, the National Women’s Chess Champion of Ambalangoda, Dharmasoka College will lead the women’s competition while Devnethmi Dahampriya of Visakha Vidyalaya, who won the Silver Medal at the last South Asian Women Chess Championships and Sanidula Dahamdi, the winner of National Women’s Rapid Chess Championship will support her. The zone 3.2 will be played on 28th May 2020 starting from 10.00 a.m. at Chess.com site.

The Sri Lanka National Major Division Chess Championships 2020 was conducted successfully by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka in 7 provinces from 1st to 4th February 2020. So far, only five events in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala and Jaffna events were held and , the CFSL upgraded in to the Ratnapura and Anuradhapura this year. The Sri Lanka National Major Division Women’s Chess Championship was inaugurated this year. The women’s event is also held in all 7 provinces.

All events are rated except under 8 years.

Event: 12 separate individual events as Under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years, Open and Girls.

Time Control:
15th-Rapid -15 Minutes + 10 Second In.
16th – Rapid 8.00 – 10
16th Blitz -3Minutes + 2 Second In. from 11.00 a.m.

Eligibility: All three type of Rated players and the players qualified from the qualifying events held in January 2020 are eligible to participate. The players fall into the respective age group on the 1st of January 2020 are eligible to participate in that age group.

Registration: All those who are interested should register with their regional CFSL Officials or by sending an email to undersign on or before 14th January 2019 at 9.00 pm. (chessevents@yahoo.com)

All players who register via email will have to pay the entry fees before the start of the first round. The players will not be entered if the payment as regulations are full filled.

Entry Fee: Rs. 1600/= for both events or Rs. 1,000/= per one event. A 50% discount is granted for the CFSL Registered players at the registration, (Pl. include CFSL ID., If not contact Mr. Niroshan 0713755348 for CFSL Registration.) Late Entries coming after 14th will be charged Rs. 500/- Extra.

Number of Rounds: Will vary on the number of participants from 5 to 7.

All players are requested to report to the tournament arbiter before 8.15 am on 19th for Rapid Event.

A Total of 59 participate in the Boys section while a total of 40 player participated in the Girls section.

After a 6 round battle, Binara Aradhya Gunathilake of Dharmasoka Primary School, Maharagama won the Championship with the Gold medal convincingly scoring full points, 6 out of 6 games. Rasindi Himansika of Worrier’s Knight Chess Academy shined at the Under 6 Girls Cadet Championship scoring 5.5 points out of 6 games to win the title with the Gold Medal.

J basuru Gunarathne of Richmong College, PDT Dinsas Yasarathne of Sumedha College, KMS Saneth Hemapala of Sri Gnanodya Central College, KPDMP Jayarthane of Maliyadeva Primary School and HS Perera of Sumedha College, Gampaha scored 5 points each, but Basuru and Dinsas won the Silver and Bronze medals respectively on the better tie breaker.

T Sanali Wijesekera of Swarnapali BMV, R. Lohasna Jayaweera of Musaeus College, KV Thilanya Jithuli of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya and KA Janumi Chanulya scored 5 points each and finally Sanali and Lohansa won the Silver and Bronze Medals respectively on the better tie breaker.

2.All women rated players below 1700 ELO rating. (Only the WIMs are exempted, Even WFMs should have over 1700 rating to play the National B.)

Qualification to National B Chess Championships
1. 50% of the players will be selected till 40 players.
2. 20 players will be selected till 100 players
3. 1 player for each ten players will be selected after 100 players. (Example for total 150 players 25 will be selected.)

We expect a fierce competition this year aiming the Chess Olympiad 2020 to be held in Russia in August this year. We have increased the events to Ratnapura and Anuradhapura this year. The eligibility is less than 2000 Elo for Men and less than 1700 ELO for Women. The players who have played the Major Division at least once are also eligible to play. All qualifies players from Sri Lanka National (Novices Division) Chess Championships this year may also participate.

Please be informed that the players reside in the district or who studies in a school/ University or Institute in a District or who works in an organization in the District may participate from the relevant District. If any protest is reach, the players are responsible to give the proof to the organizers on request. Any player violating this regulation will not be eligible for Sri Lanka National B / Women’s National B Chess Championships 2020.

The players who have not registered with the CFSL by 31st January may have to pay an amount of doubled entry fee. So, players may take the registration fee by contacting the District organizers earlier. It is advised to get the life membership for regular Chess Players.

He was awarded the Gold Medal + Trophy with Rs.60,000/= cash prize for his achievement..
The Kaluthara Chess Festival 2020 Organized by Kalutara Chess Club was held from 15th to 19th January 2020 at the beautiful Hotel White Haven, Panadura. A total of Rs. 360,000/= cash awards were made available by the organizers with trophies, Medals and other awards. 340 Chess Players including 150 ELO Rated players from all over Sri Lanka participated in this event which was organized for the 8th consecutive year in Kaluthara, Sri Lanka.
G C Anuruddha (FM) and Isuru Alahakoon (FM)
 tied for the Second and Third Places Tied with 8.0 points out of there 9 games and after tie breaks, GC Anuruddha won the Silver medal and Bronze for Isuru. Both has to share Rs. 32,500/= each among them.

H Methushi Amaya Fernando scored 6.5 out of 9 games to win the women’s Championship in the event. She bagged Rs. 15,000/= with the Gold Medal and the trophy. Linali Andrea Jayasuriya andW M M N Wijesinghe scored 6 points each out of 9 games. Jayasooriya won the Silver medal on the better tie breaker and Wijesinghe had to satisfy with the Bronze medal sharing Rs. 7,500/= each.

Sri Lanka National (Major Division) Chess Championship 2020 – will be held from 1st to 4th of February 2020. The 1st round will start at 9.00 a.m. on 1st . There will be one round on Monday, two Games each on other 3 days. The Tournaments will be FIDE rated with seven rounds on Swiss System. Fisher mode, 90 minutes each per a game is followed. The FIDE Laws as adopted by the CFSL. there will be 8 rounds if more than 100 players and 9 rounds if more than 200 players in an event.

The rated players below ELO 2000 and the players who played the Major Division earlier at least once are eligible to participate. All those who selected from Sri Lanka National (Novices Division) Chess Championships 2020 also can participate in the event.

The rated Women players below ELO 1700 and selected players from Women Novices Chess Championship this year can play in the SL National Women’s Major Division event. (Only the Regning National Champions, IMs and WIMs are exempted from this condition)

This year a National team is organized for the World Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2020.

The National Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2020 – Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle, Ratnapura. Anuradhapura and Jaffna Divisions will be held on 25th and 26th of January 2020. Venues will be notified.

Under 18 events are Direct Finals!

Event: 12 separate individual events as Under 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 years, Open and Girls.

The Under 18 Boys and Girls events will be held as direct finals. So, any under 18 player may directly play for the finals.

Time Control:
25th-Rapid -15 Minutes + 10 Second In.
26th -Blitz -3 Minutes + 2 Second In.

Eligibility: Those who fall into the respective age group on the 1st of January 2020 are eligible to participate in that age group. Rated players (Including rapid and Blitz Ratings), will get direct entry for the finals. They are not allowed to play this event.

Arbiters have been instructed to strictly enforce this condition.

Entry Fee: Rs. 800/= for both events or Rs. 500/= per one event. The players who does not have CFSL registration has to pay 1,000/= per one event and 1,600/= for Both. All players who played in National Youth Chess Championships 2019 regional events are already registered with CFSL for this year.
